Swallowable battery to power absorbable medical devices

Release date: 2016-08-29

According to foreign media reports, researchers at Carnegie Mellon University in the United States recently developed a biodegradable battery. The battery can be used to make a controlled release device that is swallowed by a human body like a pill, and can power a controlled release drug dispenser or monitoring device with "unprecedented" accuracy and safety.

Can be swallowed "pill" batteries already exist, but such micro-batteries usually contain toxic and harmful ingredients. The battery developed by a research team led by Christopher Bettinger, an associate professor of materials science and biomedical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, uses melanin, which the body has long been used to. The melanin present in human skin, hair and eyes is non-toxic and environmentally friendly.

Researchers say that melanin absorbs ultraviolet light and inhibits free radical activity in the body, while binding and unbinding metal ions. During the testing phase, the melanin battery can continue to power the ingestible medical device for 20 hours.
