On the 30th, the reporter learned from the Changzhou Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention that Changzhou City, Jiangsu Province had previously discovered the world's first case of H7N4 avian influenza. A new recombinant H7N4 avian influenza virus with wild-fowl origin was discovered and confirmed from the respiratory specimens of this severe pneumonia case by the Jiangsu Provincial Center for Disease Control, the National Center for Disease Control, and the Institute of Microbiology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. This is the first time in the world that the H7N4 avian influenza virus can cause serious human infections. A few days ago, relevant research results have been published in the journal Science Bulletin.

The reporter learned that in early January 2018, Changzhou Third People's Hospital submitted a sample of patients with severe pneumonia to the Changzhou CDC through the Changzhou City Unexplained Pneumonia Surveillance Network. Tested by Jiangsu Provincial Disease Control Center, the test results of Changzhou disease control were confirmed, and it was determined by gene sequencing that it was suspected to be a subtype of influenza virus H7N4. This subtype had no reports of human infections in the world.

"Because of caution, Changzhou CDC has done a lot of treatment and investigation work for this case. The observation period for this case is up to 1 month." Chen Cong, deputy director of the Changzhou Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said.

Studies have shown that this is the first time in the world that the H7N4 avian influenza virus can cause serious human infections. Epidemiological investigations and molecular traceability analysis suggest that the virus is likely to be derived from wild birds and transmitted to humans by infecting poultry that are free-range in the wild. Sequence analysis revealed that the virus tends to bind to the ?-2,3 receptor, is less pathogenic to avian, and sensitive to neuraminidase inhibitors. Further viral gene evolution analysis suggested that the H7 gene of the virus was derived from the Eurasian wild bird, not from the H7N9 virus.

Experts believe that the findings of this case are only cases, and the public need not worry too much. (Reporter Guo Guozhong)
